My Success Story...
Growing up in a Cuban household, family life centered around the kitchen. Healthy cooking was not a part of my mother's repertoire. Her favorite arsenal was a frying pan and a gallon jug of Crisco. Whether a good day or a bad day, she would make my favorite meal... fried pork chunks with white rice, black beans and sweet plantains (fried bananas). My mother meant no harm, but childhood habits dealing with stress were created.
One of the memory that stands out the most was going shopping for new clothes at the start of a new school year during high school. It always ended the same -- the salesperson announcing over the intercom to the stockroom to "bring out the Husky pants." By the time I reach college, my fraternity brothers nicknamed me "the Pillsbury Doughboy," for being the fattest pledge in my class.
Through the years, I tried every diet on the market. I always met with some success, but it never lasted. I was never able to keep the weight off and ended up heavier than before. It was depressing and I didn't know what to do...ever increasing neck size or a ballooning waistline reaching a max of 250lbs.
Then two years ago, things totally changed ... a new health plan, a physical, and 3 pills on a daily basis! The doctor found signs of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the early warning for Type 2 Diabetes. While out to lunch with a colleague and I shared my predicament. He told me that he too was having a weight issue and was thinking of going to “Weight Watchers.” In fact, he was going to a meeting that very night and invited me to come along. I did and the rest is history!
Weight Watchers made me see that I had choices. I could eat a slice of pizza and a beer or two for lunch, but those choices had consequences. After a couple of weeks, I started making better choices. For the first time in my life, I was no longer defined by my weight or my food.
Weight Watchers not only changed my life, it changed my outlook on life. Weight Watchers made me realize that if I set my mind to it, there is nothing that I can’t accomplish. I not only lost 75lbs, I also trained for and ran my first marathon in Miami, Florida.
My new body, my new outlook, my new life… I owe it all to Weight Watchers.
